During the hot season, Krishna regularly plays in the various rivers, lakes, waterfalls, kundas and sarovaras of Vraja, i.e. Radha Kunda, Yamunaji, Pavana Sarovara and Manasi Ganga. Sometimes with the boys and sometimes with the gopis, Krishna thoroughly enjoys swimming, diving, floating, splashing, frolicking, and boating in the refreshingly, cool transcendental waters of Sridhama Vrindavana.

Sri Krishna’s water pastimes (jala-keli) are beautifully described in a variety of scriptures. The following lila comes from Srila Rupa Goswamipada’s Padyavali (269-280)

A Boating Pastime (nauka-lila)

One hot summer day, Nandanandana disguised Himself as a boatman wearing a red gumsha around His hips and another one tied on His head. Then He climbed into an old dilapidated boat tied to the shore of the Yamuna and pretended to sleep.

Radhika and Her sakhis approached that boatman and repeatedly called out, “Hey Nauka! Take us to the other side of Yamunaji!” Krishna, however, ignored their pleas while continuing to feign sleeping. Finally, the nauka-dhari woke up and said, “O My dear young girl, please step into My boat.

Just before Radha stepped into the boat, Lalita-sakhi whispered in Her ear, “Wait a minute sakhi! Look there at the boatman’s gumsha. He’s hiding a vamshi inside. This nauka is none other than that notorious Nauka Bihari Shyama!”

The ruse revealed, Radha said, “O Nauka Bihariji. The river is very deep, this is an old rickety boat, and we are simply helpless girls. It is very dangerous for us to board this boat. But what to do? There are no other naukas available at present who can take us slender girls across the Yamuna.”

Cautiously, the gopis boarded the boat and Krishna began plying the rickety craft across Yamunaji. In the middle of the Yamuna, Krishna suddenly stopped the boat and demanded immediate payment of the fare. Shyama smiled as He gazed at the frightened face of Radha, who had no money to give.

Forgoing the fare, Shyama moved the boat along. Out of nowhere, a powerful wind arose and started violently tossing the boat. Greatly alarmed, Radha said, “This boat is rocking to and fro. The river is deep and this reckless Nandanandana is the captain. Now the sun is setting in the west and the village of Vraja is still far away. And I am a helpless girl. O sakhi, what shall I do now?”

The boat started filling with water and began to sink into the Yamuna. Radha and the gopis tried their best to bail out the water. “O Lalita, said Radha! Alas! Destiny has become My enemy. My hands are exhausted. They can no longer throw out the water.

“The Yamuna is filled with huge waves, and the boat is filling with water. Still, Kåñëa is not afraid. Even in this calamity, lusty-hearted Krishna again and again puts His hand on me!”

Turning Her attention to the nauka-dhari, Radhika said, “O Shyama, all You do is speak joking words and fool around. O Krishna, if I live through this, I will never again place My feet in Your boat.”

Shyama replied to His sweetheart, “O Sundari Radha! Don’t be so harsh. By Your mercy We will live through this. All You need do is pay the boat-fare of a promise to enjoy with Me a festival of amorous pastimes in the cave of Govardhana Hill.”

Sometime later when the gopis came to the Yamuna, Radha remembered this encounter with “the boatman”. At that time, Kishori appealed to Her dear friends: “O sakhis! All of you please bow down before your ishta-devata, and pray that either Yamunaji becomes very shallow, or that we get a boat-captain other than Shyama!”

Remembering this pastime in the mood of maidservant, Srila Raghunatha dasa Goswamipada yearns for Radha’s intimate seva: “When will I serve Sri Radha in Her favorite lake on a warm summer evening? Yearning to enjoy water-pastimes, Radha and Her playful sakhis jubilantly sprinkle the expert Govinda with streams of water from their pitchkaris.” (Utkantha-dashaka 8)

Ananda Khanda Bhagavan Sri Krishna ki jai! Radha-Krishna Nauka-lila ki jai!

For the pleasure of your Thakurajis, devotees should place their Giriraja or Shaligrama shilas in a container of cool, fragrant water mixed with tulasi, flowers and sandalwood paste on the hot sunny days (above 32 C.). That means NOW from April to August (India), from 9 a.m. til sunset. Then remove Thakuraji and place Him on His singhasana.

For murtis i.e. Radha-Krishna, Gaura-Nitai, this seva means placing a small water fountain before Thakuraji. Srila Prabhupada describes, “Fountains can still be seen in various temples of Vrindavana during the summer season. It is a small, aromatic fountain of flowers fixed in front of the Deities.” (Krishna Book 45)

Here’s the details of this wonderful seva from Srila Sanatana Goswamipada’s Hari bhakti-vilasa (15.1-18):

The description starts with a prayer glorifying Gauranga’s grace. “By the mercy of Sri Chaitanya, even the most fallen can observe grand festivals i.e. water sports (jala vihara) for the pleasure of Bhagavan Sri Krishna. I take shelter of Sri Chaitanya.”

“After performing your regular daily puja, place Thakuraji in a container of water coming from either a gold, silver, copper or clay vessel. And please remember: DO NOT PUT Thakuraji in water on cloudy days.

“Because Vishnu created water; lies in it and because water is very dear to Vishnu, one should worship Hari by placing Him in water, especially during the hot season, jalsrashta yato visnur, jalashayi jalapriya, tasmad grishme visheshana, jalstham pujayed harim.”

In Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu (1.2.88-89), Srila Rupa Goswamipada describes the devotional practice (bhakti-anga) of serving and worshiping persons and things (tadiyanam ca sevanam) that are related and very dear to Bhagavan Sri Krishna i.e. the Tulasi plant, Srimad Bhagavatam, Mathura/Vrindavana and the Vaisnavas, tadiyas tulasi-shastra-mathura vaisnava adayah.

All Gaudiya Vaisnava acharyas write and preach about worshiping Vrindavana because it is Bhagavan Sri Krishna’s sweet home, and the beautiful place of His most satisfying and blissful pastimes with His dearest sweetheart Srimati Radharani and all other elegant damsels of Vraja.

Here is a small sample of acharyas’ praising Sri Dhama Vrindavana.

Sri Prabodhananda Sarasvati:

“You should worship Vrindavana forest as if it were your very life and soul, because Vraja is filled with the essence of the greatest prema rasa known as madanakhya mahabhava. (5.45) With the nectar of ecstatic love, please worship Vrindavana, the most amazing of all Krishna’s abodes. (7.49) Please just worship Vrindavana, where Radhika eternally wanders from bower to bower. (13.25)

“Vrajabhumi is so special, unique and magnificently attractive that Srimati Radharani and Sri Krishna also worship Vrindavana. One day Shyama said, ‘O Priyaji! Let Us expand into millions of forms, and with each of those forms We will offer arati to Sri Vrindavana Dhama!’” (14.53) (Vrindavana Mahimamrita)

Srila Narottama dasa Thakura:

Thakura Narottama presents the essence of Krishna consciousness as, anande bolo hari, bhaja vrindavana, “Chant “Hari! Hari!” in bliss and worship Vrindavana!” (Nama Sankirtana)

Srila Prabhupada comments: “If you want a transcendental, blissful life, then chant the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra, and come worship the holy place of Vrindavana!” (SB 4.23.7)

The entire Vraja Mandala is the tadiya vastu of Sri Krishna, and it is eternally and intimately connected with Krishna. Not only Vraja Bhumi but all the objects, places, things and Vrajavasi residents are also tadiya and worshipable. In his bhajana “Vrindavana Mahimamrita, Srila Narottama dasa Thakura sings, “jaya radhe, jaya krishna, jaya vrindavana, shyama-kunda, radha kunda, giri-govardhana….and…”All glories to Yamuna, Mahavana, Keshi-ghata, Vamshi-vata, Dvadasha Vana, Rama-ghata and also all glories, all glories to the wonderful Vrajavasis, jaya jaya vrindavana basi jata jana.”

While teaching the science of bhakti-yoga to His devotee, Bhagavan Sri Krishna said, “O my dear Uddhava! Without being embarrassed or caring about the laughter of friends, one should transcend his bodily consciousness and offer dandavat pranams to all—even the cows, outcastes, dogs and asses, visrjya smayamanan svan, drsham vridam ca daihikim, pranamed danda-vad bhumav, a shva, chandala go kharam.” (SB 11.29.16)

Srila Visvanatha Cakravartipada comments, “Here Bhagavan Sri Krishna is saying, ‘O Uddhava! This verse describes the practice of one who naturally sees Me everywhere. One should disregard the ridicule of friends who are saying, “Look! This great person is offering respects to a low creature.” ‘Uddhava, one should give up the bodily conception of thinking, “I am so elevated and he is so fallen. So how can I offer respects to him?” Just give up that embarrassment, see Krishna everywhere and offer respects even to the dogs and chandalas.’”

500 years ago, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu spoke similar instructions: “Considering one’s self to be lower than a blade of grass, one should always show respect to others, trnad api sunichena, mana dena.” Gauranga also said, “A devotee should be prideless and show respect to all living entities, knowing them to be the resting place of Krishna, habe nirabhimana jive sammana, dibe jani krishna adhisthana.” (Cc. 3.20.21, 25)

O Krishna, as Gajendra once offered a lotus to You in submission, I put the lotus of my heart in my hand and surrender unto You.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, please touch me with Your lotus-like hand, so that the lotus bud of my consciousness will unfold and bloom with brilliant sattvika ecstasies in pure love for You.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, You sometimes hold a golden lotus in Your hand and twirl it back and forth, spinning the minds of the gopis in whirlpools of endless joy. O Krishna, I pray for the day when You spin my mind in the same way!

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, my mind is lazy and crazy, caring not for any authority. O Krishna, please enthuse my mind with Your murali, and make me move merrily on the path of bhakti.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, my mind is very sinful and lusty; sometimes happy and sometimes distressed. O Krishna, please remove the roots of sin from my mind and protect the tiny creeper of bhakti I am trying to grow there.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, there are many hidden demons lurking in the dark places of my mind and heart. Please enter there, find them, and destroy them. As Gopala, You maintain and nourish the universe. So, please nourish me by giving me all the divine qualities such as patience, confidence, conviction, compassion, simplicity, tranquility, modesty, forgiveness, fearlessness, steadiness, and self-control.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, You are the maintainer of religious principles. O Krishna, please support me, and help me to remain austere and steady in following all the regulative principles of devotional service.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, simply by Your touch, one can immediately become free from all material desires and contamination, and achieve transcendental knowledge. O Krishna, by Your touch, one’s heart fills with love and symptoms of ecstasy manifest in his body.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, with Your soft and sweet lotus hands, please lift me out of the horrible ocean of repeated birth and death. By Your touch, may I become free from all material contamination and be illuminated with pure spiritual knowledge. May my heart flood with Radha-Govinda prema, and may my body become effulgent with spiritual bliss.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, with Your lotus-like hands, you bestow benedictions upon all kinds of living entities. With Your gentle, loving lotus hand, You wipe the pearl-like drops of perspiration from the faces of the gopis who feel instantly refreshed by Your sweet touch. Pressing the vamshi to Your cherry-red lips, You play the sweetest, most enchanting music to thrill the hearts of Your devotees.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, as You hold the vamshi in Your hands, please hold me in Your hands and protect me from Maya. Use me as an instrument in Your service, and engage me in many sweet ways to please all Your devotees.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, You accept all that is offered with love. So now let me lovingly offer You my very self and beg for a blessing in return. May I always remember You, be with You and love You forever, serving You in Vraja Gokula as You sport and play with Your Priyaji Radha.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

Sri Krishna sharanam mama! Jai Jai Sri Radhe!

O Krishna, You destroy the darkness within devotee’s hearts. I am covered by the darkness of greed, anger, pride and the desire for fame. O Krishna, kindly illuminate my heart and destroy this darkness.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, You dissipate the darkness of the world, and manifest the knowledge of great souls. Please manifest pure knowledge of Yourself within my heart, and destroy the darkness of illusion covering my real identity.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, You are faster than mind, the master of speech and You perform wonderful acts. You are truth and encouraging statements. Whenever the tendency arises within my mind to speak nonsense, to belittle the devotees, or to speak negative, discouraging words, please be there at that moment with your lightning speed to work wonders. Make me always speak the truth about You, glorify You and lovingly encourage all Your devotees.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, I am full of improper behavior and desires to perform whimsical unregulated acts. I have no cleanliness, nor do I know what to do or what not to do. Please give me the power and the wisdom to strictly follow the example of the previous acharyas. Please give me the determination to always act purely and religiously, and to perform only activities that are pleasing to You.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, You easily destroy the magical forces of the demons. My rascal mind produces many such magical illusions, and like a ruffian he shouts cruel slogans like, “Go ahead! You can enjoy. Forget about Krishna and Guru. Just be natural, be yourself.” O Krishna, Please dispel these mystic illusions from my mind and fix my mind on Your soft and sweet, beautiful lotus feet.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, the crocodile of duplicity is swallowing my heart. Please crush this crocodile and make me Your honest devotee.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, You relentlessly chased the Vaisnava aparadhi Durvasa all over the universe. Please accompany me wherever I may travel, and immediately chase away the demon of Vaisnava aparadha from my mind and heart.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, Your glance is sweet, merciful and all auspicious. Your glance pacifies, enlivens, inspires and satisfies Your devotees. I am a lazy blind fool with very little determination to serve. O Krishna, please glance upon me, make me fortunate, purify my heart, and fill me with the enthusiasm to serve Sri Hari, Guru and the Vaisnavas.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, with Your invincible chakra, please cut down the karma cakra and samsara cakra which are moving me on through endless births with no end in sight! O Mukunda, please liberate me and tie me to Your feet as a slave bound in love. Kindly give me a place in the mandala of rasa, Vraja Mandala, and let me dance there around and around forever delighting in the light of Your love.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

Spiritual life is nothing but one long, arduous journey of surrender.

We surrender our minds to hear Gita and Guru.

We surrender our hearts to take diksha from Sri Guru.

We surrender our time to practice bhakti sadhana.

We surrender our attachments to live as Krishna wants.

We surrender our desires to desire only Krishna.

We surrender our love to receive Krishna’s love.

And at last, we surrender our lives hoping to attain Sri Krishna.

In pursuance of that goal, we offer the following prayer to my Loving Lord, while continually praying, “O Krishna! I beg Your mercy.”

O Sri Krishna! I am a fool, completely ignorant and I have no experience, yet still I want to offer a prayer to You. I know that You are in my heart, so I beg You to please inspire me, and guide me in glorifying You with transcendental sound.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, You destroy the demons with Your weapons, Your will and with all-devouring time. You bless Your devotees with the lotus twirling in Your beautiful petal-like fingers. You make their lives auspicious by kindly giving them strength, protection and victory in the struggle of life.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna! May I always hear Your sweet melodious voice resounding in my heart, reassuring me with Your words: “My devotee will never be vanquished!”

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, You are completely pure but I am full of all dirty things. Please purify my mind and heart, and make me dance in joy to Your Holy Names. My mind is full of fear, hankering and anxiety. So please remove this filth and grant me the inner peace to always feel Your presence.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, the demoniac soldiers of arrogance and conceit are attacking the city of my heart. Please chastise these miscreants so that I may come to my senses, and realize that I am Your humble servant.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, the elephant of sinful lust has entered my garden of devotion. O Krishna, let me remember the elephant goad sign on the bottom Your right foot, and thus drive out this mad elephant of desire.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, please cover the eyes of the sinful enemies of envy within me that make me blind to the good qualities in others, and force me to offend the Vaisnavas.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, please protect me from the constant attacks of my bad habits of laziness and wasting time searching for material happiness.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

O Krishna, please protect me from the six faults: overeating and collecting too much, bad association, neglecting the rules and regulations of the scriptures, unnecessary talking about mundane topics, over-endeavor for material objectives, and lusting over mundane achievements.

O Krishna! I beg for Your mercy.

Sri Krishna sharanam mama! Jai Jai Sri Radhe!

I once asked my teacher, “If a devotee dreams of guru or Krishna is that true? What to make of dreams?” My teacher kindly answered, “Dreams are true! Dreams of Guru or Krishna are true. This is told in Vedanta sutra 3.2.4. Of, course it is rare to dream like this. One must be very pure and very fortunate.”

Later I looked up the Vedanta Sutra and found out some amazing things about dreams. Here are the appropriate citations:

VEDANTA SUTRA: Svapnadkhikaran 3.2.4

Are the dream objects real or false? The Shruti says, sücakaç ca hi çruter äcakñate ca tad-vidaù “Dreams are true because the dream objects indicate future results.”

Sri Baladeva Vidya Bhusana says “The knowers of dreams predict results, so dream objects are real. Because (hi) the dream object indicates (sücakaù) things auspicious or inauspicious or indicates a mantra, the creations in dreams are real.

This point is proven in Shruti:

yadä karmasu kämyeñu, striyaà svapne ‘bhipaçyati,

samåddhià tatra jänéyät, tasmin svapna-nidarçane

“If, when performing kämya-karmas, one sees a woman in a dream, he should know that the rites were successful.” Chändogya Upaniñad 5.2.9

Those who know dreams (tad-vidaù) say (äcakñate) [Vs. 3.2.4] that the dream indicates good or bad results. Riding on an elephant indicates something auspicious will happen and riding on a donkey indicates something inauspicious.

According to Smrti, one can obtain a mantra in a dream:

ädiñöavän yathä svapne räma-rakñäm imäà haraù

tathä likhitavän prätaù prabuddho buddha-kauçikaù

Buddha-kauçika on waking in the morning wrote out the mantra called Räma-rakñä that Çiva taught him in a dream. Räma-kavaca

It is proven that dreams often correctly predict future events, reveal mantras or prescribe medicines. Dream objects are real like objects in the waking state.

Dreams appear or disappear by the will of the Lord. This is not surprising since God is also the cause of bondage and liberation. saàsära-mokña-sthiti-bandha-hetuù: the Lord is the cause of bondage, subsistence and release in this world. (Çvetäçvatara Upaniñad 6.16)

The Kurma Purana says the Lord alone is the creator and destroyer of the perception of dreams, since by his will the jéva attains bondage and liberation, svapnädi-buddhi-kartä ca, tiraskartä sa eva tu tad-icchayä yato hy asya, bandha-mokñau pratiñïhitau.

Here’s a statement from the Srimad Bhagavatam Tenth Canto to prove the Sruti claim above that dreams predict future events. When Kaàsa heard how Sri Krishna broke the sacrificial bow and how the guards had been killed, he understood that the eighth child of Devaké had come to kill him. That night he had ghastly dreams of ghosts, poison and murder. Thus he understood that his death was sure.

Once Hayagriva das had the following conversation with Srila Prabhupada:

HD: “Prabhupada, last night I dreamed of Krishna.”

SP: “That is no ordinary dream. Dreams of Krishna and the spiritual master are not ordinary. If the spiritual master gives you instructions in a dream, you should follow them.”

HD: “I’ll never forget that dream.”

SP: “Yes. That is Krishna’s blessing.” (Vrindavana Days chapter 25)

Summary:

Although it did not specifically mention dreams of guru or Sri Krishna, the Vedanta Sutra did say that DREAMS ARE TRUE because they predict future good or bad events, prescribe medicines, cures, and give mantras. The objects of dreams are real and produced by Bhagavan, who is the creator and destroyer of dreams as well. If by good fortune one dreams of Sri Guru or Sri Krishna, but the message is unclear, confusing or bewildering, then one should take guidance from a trusted senior devotee.

Srila Prabhupada confirms above that Krishna/Guru dreams are real and significant. The divine dreams of a devotee are rare gifts bestowed upon one by the causeless mercy of Sri Guru and Sri Krishna. We should cherish our dream treasures, and pray every night to be gifted again.

May everyone have Sweet Dreams of madhurya-mayi Radha and Krishna madhurya!

Jai Jai Sri Radhe!

The unlimited ocean of Vedic knowledge within the Upanisads was condensed into a sweet nectar of liberating wisdom called the Bhagavad-gita, known widely as the “Gitopanisad”. The Gita teaches that all living entities are fully controlled by the supreme will of Bhagavan Sri Krishna acting through His invincible powers of time and nature (kala, prakrti). You and I and everyone else are just puppets moving madly by the strings of God’s power and will.

So what is the question of our having free will to choose, to do, act or change? In only one verse (18.63) the Gita speaks of individual free will, yatha icchasi tatha kuru. The extent of one’s free will, however, is measured by how much the person is covered and influenced by the three modes of nature, triguna.

As one moves closer to Krishna by rising up through the mud of ignorance and the swirling waters of passion, he finds himself floating somewhat free in the clear air of goodness. Goodness (sattva-guna) is next to God, who is the abode of unlimited free will. Thus one’s proximity to Bhagavan determines the limit of one’s free will. Near to Krishna, your free will is great, and far from Krishna, your free will is nil. From my limited experience it seems that my life has been about 1% free will and 99% Krishna’s will.

The fullest expression of an individual’s free will appears when his will becomes one with Krishna’s will to love and be loved. In the kingdom of love divine, Goloka Vrindavana, all will is but one will, the will to love Krishna.

So this is the good news from Gita: “Yes, you have free will!” Now use it to willfully surrender to Bhagavan Sri Krishna. When we freely will to love Krishna, Krishna will love us in return. Then love will do what it wills.

The following quotes come from a Net article on free will posted by Sri Advaitadasji.

Why are we here? Where did it all begin? Why do we suffer? Why was I created and when? Was I created at some point in time? Or have I always existed for all time?

Such questions often arise in a curious intellect. There are as many answers to these questions as there are people to ask the questions…uncountable! Recently, we discovered some good answers to these perplexing questions which we will now share with you.

  1. There is no such thing as IN THE BEGINNING or “When Krishna desires.”

In the introduction to Caitanya-caritamta, Srila Prabhupada said “Although we speak of ‘when’ Krishna desires, just when Krishna did desire we cannot say. We only speak in this way because in conditional life we take it that everything has a beginning. However, in that absolute or spiritual life there is neither beginning nor end.”

Sri Jiva Gosvami commenting on Srimad Bhagavatam 10.87.31 writes: “When Sridhara Swami says that the birth of the jiva (living entity) simply means the birth of the upadhi, it is to be understood that this birth of the upadhi (designation) is like a flow which has no beginning.”

The meaning is that the jiva (living entity) is experiencing a cycle of birth and death which has no beginning. Because it has no beginning, it is futile to ask, “Who did it?” or “When did it happen?” Such questions imply a lack of understanding of the meaning and implication of words like beginningless and causeless.

  1. ETERNAL IGNORANCE

This is the nature of all jivas stuck in the material world.

In his commentary (SB 3.7.10), Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti says, “Avidya (ignorance) which is anadi (without any beginning), is situated on the backside of Sri Krishna and has the nature of ignorance. Avidya covers the knowledge of the jivas (living entities) who are situated on the backside of the Lord and are non-devotees. Their non-devotion is anadi. There is no real reason or purpose for their knowledge being covered.”

Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti states here that Krishna does not put the jiva (living entity) in ignorance for any specific gain or purpose. Krishna is atmarama and everything happens out of His nature. The fact that the jivas, living entities, (you and me) are in ignorance is without any beginning and without any cause.

Admittedly, this is difficult to digest, and even more impossible to understand. That’s just the way it is, so why fight over how it happened or never happened or has been happening ad infinitum.

If fortune has “somehow or other” descended upon us, we may know something about Krishna and desire to serve and love Him. Then just do that and you will go to Krishna in the spiritual realm of Goloka Vrindavana. And from there, you will never ever return to this inexplicable domain called maya-jagat, the material world of birth, death, old age and disease.

Just as Krishna has no cause (anadi adi govinda), similarly there is no cause for the bondage of the jiva (living entity). Therefore, Krishna cannot be blamed for that which He is not the cause.

Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti often speaks about the beginningless bondage of the jiva (living entity) in his commentaries on Srimad Bhagavatam (see 3.7.9, 3.7.10 and 11.11.4).

Here is his wonderful commentary on Bhagavad Gita 13.20:

prakrtim purusham caiva, viddhy ANADI ubhav api

vikaramsh ca gunamsh caiva, viddhi prakrti-sambhavan

Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti said, “The essence of Sri Krishna’s words in this verse are the following. Sri Krishna is saying that because both maya and the jiva (living entity) are My potencies, they are both beginningless, and thus their union is also beginningless.

“In this verse (Bg. 13.20) Sri Krishna answers two questions: Why and when did the union of the jiva and maya occur? In other words, when did the jiva become covered by maya or illusion? The word anadi (Bg. 13.20) answers both these questions. The answer given by Sri Krishna is that the union of maya and the jiva (living entity) has no cause and no beginning.

Thus, Sri Krishna cannot be blamed for some jivas (like all of us) being in material conditioning. Krishna did not initiate this; it was not created in some point in time. It is also important to note that in his word/word meanings, Srila Prabhupada has translated the word anadi as “without beginning” (Bg. 13.20). And in his translation of the verse, Srila Prabhupada says anadi means beginningless.

Srila Prabhupada’s translation to (Bg. 13.20): “Material nature [maya] and the living entities [jivas] should be understood to be beginningless. Their transformations and the modes of matter are products of material nature [maya, tri-gunas].”

Srila Prabhupada’s clear and exact translation leaves absolutely no room for misinterpretation of the word anadi that Krishna speaks in this verse. Thus all the acharyas such as Srila Prabhupada, Baladeva Vidyabhusana, Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti and Sri Jiva Gosvami agree that the jivas (all of us) are without beginning. We have always been here, right where we are.

Now let’s examine Srila Prabhupada purport to (Bg. 13.20):

“Both material nature and the living entity are eternal. That is to say that they existed before the creation. The material manifestation is from the energy of the Supreme Lord, and so also are the living entities, but the living entities are of the superior energy. Both the living entities and material nature existed before this cosmos was manifested. Material nature was absorbed in the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Mahä-Viñëu, and when it was required, it was manifested by the agency of mahat-tattva.

“Similarly, the living entities are also in Him, and because they are conditioned, they are averse to serving the Supreme Lord. Thus they are not allowed to enter into the spiritual sky. But with the coming forth of material nature these living entities are again given a chance to act in the material world and prepare themselves to enter into the spiritual world. THAT IS THE MYSTERY OF THIS MATERIAL CREATION.”

Comment: Srila Prabhupada ki jai! The above Gita verse and Srila Prabhupada’s purport CLEARLY EXPLAIN that the living entities as well as material nature remain absorbed in Maha-Vishnu during the period of dissolution. At the time of creation Lord Maha-Vishnu injects them into material nature. This cycle repeats itself again and again eternally, without beginning and without end, except for those individual jivas who somehow or other receive the causeless mercy of Sri Krishna or His devotees and take up the practice of Krishna bhakti-yoga.

III. Here Misery & Hatred—There Only Bliss & Love

The spiritual realms of Vaikuntha and Goloka Vrindavan are completely composed of pure loving consciousness, ever expressing itself in selfless activities of serving and pleasing one another in an infinite variety of tasty wonderful ways. There is absolutely no envy, hatred or malice whatsoever in the spiritual sky.

Now let’s look at the “desire/envy verse” from Bhagavad Gita 7.27:

iccha dvesha samutthena, dvandva-mohena bharata

sarva-bhutani sammoham, sarge yanti parantapa

Sri Krishna said, “The living entities are born into material nature, overcome by desire and hate (iccha, dvesh).”

Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti tika: “If someone asks, ‘O Krishna, since when are the jivas bewildered by Your maya?’ Sri Krishna speaks the current verse. At the beginning of the creation all jivas become bewildered. By what? By the desire and hatred which springs from the karma performed in the past [their previous material birth]. The past here means the previous cycle of creation [in the endless cycle of creation and dissolution from Maha-Vishnu].”

In his tika on this verse, Sri Baladeva Vidyabhusana also states that one is influenced by the impression of desire and hatred from the previous birth [in the material world]. Thus, both commentators agree that the jiva (living entity) is suffering in a beginningless cycle of birth and death.

Why is it like this, how is it like this? The only answer is that it is the arrangement of God, God’s will only. It is His very nature since He, God, Bhagavan Sri Krishna is completely independent and omnipotent.

Whenever he described inconceivable subjects, acintya-tattva, like this in his books Srila Prabhupada used the phrase “SOMEHOW OR OTHER”. In fact, this phrase, which basically means that there is no reason, no cause and no explanation appears 2, 986 times on the BBT folio search engine!!!

  1. Creation Has No Cause

The Mandukya Ups. (1.9) explains the cause of creation thus: “Some say that Krishna creates the material world for His enjoyment, and some say Krishna creates for His play. Indeed, it is Krishna’s very nature. After all, Krishna is fully satisfied (apta-kama), so what desires does He have to fulfill, bhogartham srshtir ityanye, kridarthamiti capare, devasyaisha svabhavo’yam, aptakamasya ka sprha.”

The idea is that just as Krishna is causeless so are His activities such as the creation. It is not possible to attribute any ultimate cause for them except that it is Krishna’s very nature. Anyone who has energy will act. Everywhere we see that people act to attain something. But Bhagavan Sri Krishna is different.

Krishna and only Krishna is aptakama, one whose desires are fully satisfied. Therefore, Krishna, unlike us, does not “have to do something or need to do anything”. Sri Krishna’s activities are just part of His nature.

Conclusion: The subjects of creation, suffering, eternity, timelessness, cause and beginning are practically impossible to comprehend with our limited, linear thinking, logic/reasoning conditioned minds. In this regard, mahajana Bhishmadeva says, “Inconceivable objects are beyond logic and arguments, acintya khalu ye bhava na tans tarkena yojayet.” (Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva, 5.12)

So how can one know the unknowable? It is only by faith and bhakti that one can fathom that which is inconceivable. Sri Krishna says (Bg. 18.55): “By bhakti one can know Me in truth and come to Me eternally, bhaktyya mam abhijanati, yavan yas casmi tattvatah, tato mam tattvato jnatva vishate tad-anantaram.”

The plain fact is that for whatever reason/no reason, cause/no cause, we are all stuck here eternally and suffering!!!

Unless… the mercy, Sri Krishna’s causeless loving grace, somehow falls our way. Then a jiva may get the seed of bhakti, the way of pure love—and receive his ticket to eternity.

Perfecting a life of bhakti bhajan brings the jiva to an inconceivable realm of bliss eternal, where all are serving and sporting in the endless waves of Krishna’s infinite love, krishna prema ananta taranga.
